La Suiza is a community comprised of a 100 families located in the Highlands of San Marcos, Guatemala. The community resettled around a disused coffee plantation after the Guatemalan civil war (the war which continued from the 1950’s –1990’s left over 200,000 Mayan people killed and hundreds of thousands more displaced). The community has a school, shops and several civic buildings, but it lacks a connection to the electricity grid. Alost all families in the community are involved in growing coffee, and the community currently produces high quality single origin coffee which is specially selected and roasted by De la Gente; a US based fair-trade coffee broker that creates direct farm-to-table connections between coffee growing communities and consumers.
